A Volunteer Society

Since its formation in 1962 the Gloucester District Historical Society has been supported by a broad membership base of people who are interested in recording and preserving our unique local history.   Having no funds to employ staff, our day-to-day operations depend on the involvement of a dedicated core of active volunteers, each of whom contributes according to their personal interests, and the time they can devote.
Tasks range over curating our Museum displays;  receiving and engaging with visitors;  sorting, preserving, filing, and indexing archival material;  library management;  and historical research and publication.  If you would like to join us please click here, or else feel free to drop in on one of our opening days.

Become a Volunteer

There is always a need for volunteers on the Museum Roster, transcribing and recording documents, cataloging our photo collection, or organising and naming many of the treasures in the Archive Centre, helping with tour groups and the many other jobs that arise from time to time.

Members receive a bi-monthly newsletter, either by email or post, according to their preference.  This provides them with updates on current and prospective activities at the Museum and Archive Centre, with matters of ongoing interest in the broader community, and, when available, with items of local history research contributed by members.

The Society is Incorporated as a not-for-profit association under NSW legislation.  This provides protection for members, and in particular for volunteers, who are also covered by an insurance policy while engaged in volunteer duties.  It also requires that we operate within the framework of a Constitution (currently being revised), which is consistent with the relevant rules as prescribed under the Act.

Thanks to the dedication and energy of our founding members, and their successors, the Society owns the freehold to the Heritage Listed Museum building at 12 Church Street, which was originally the Gloucester Shire Council Chambers, and has recently been able to build a new Archive and Research Centre on the same site.  We also have an interest in St Clements Park on the south side of the town, which was the site of the first church built in Gloucester.
